The Salvation Army Announces New Leadership in Helena
Majors Phil and Lawry Smith to lead social services, church, and more
(Helena, MT) – The Salvation Army Northwest Division announces the appointment of Majors Phil and Lawry Smith to its location in Helena. Major Lawry will also assume the role as the Montana State Capital Liaison for The Salvation Army. They replace Captains Rob and Tiffany Lawler, who have been appointed to The Salvation Army in Salt Lake City, Utah.
For the past four years, Majors Smith have served at The Salvation Army Seattle Social Services. In June 1997, they graduated from The Salvation Army Officer Training College in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.
As Salvation Army officers, the Majors expect to be reassigned throughout their careers. The commitment of being an officer includes moving your family frequently, and accepting reassignments based on career development and filling the needs of The Salvation Army locations. The assignment in Helena is an acknowledgment of their ability to manage a large social services program and growing congregation.
They began work in Helena on June 26. “We are very excited about the current ministries of The Salvation Army in Helena and look forward to bringing our experiences alongside the work of the amazing staff and Advisory Board there. We love the community setting Helena offers and can’t wait to acquaint ourselves with the local agencies, friends and neighbors we’ve heard such great things about,” Major Phil Smith said.
Established in 1888, The Salvation Army in Helena provides social services to families in need. Among the programs offered are emergency utility assistance, eviction prevention, food and nutrition programs, veterans services, and emergency disaster services.
